The time has come for those of us who write non-fiction to rise up and adopt the word “faction” so that we’re no longer forced to live in the negation of another genre.

I mean...you can ‘turn right’ and ‘be right’...you can ‘turn left’ and get ‘left behind’...why not have a ‘dissenting faction’ and ‘write faction’? 🤷🏾‍♂️

Hey peanut gallery, he said "adopt" the word, he didn't say anything about creating it. Open ur eyes, ears, minds & READ! That is what is SO wrong with people in general these days; NOBODY listens, everyone is so quick to jump on any bandwagon & everyone is looking 4 a fight.🙄

I think the rampant need to correct others in mildly condescending terms might be part of the trouble too.

Sorry @neiltyson I shouldn't have continued negativity on your thread. Your amazing and I'm distracting from the fostering of a love of thought and science that you are nurturing. Sorry I couldn't (actually just didn't) help myself.

In German, we don't have this problem. We call non-fiction books "Sachbuch" (singular). The literal translation would be "thing book" or "book about a thing". We also have "Fachbuch" for even more specialized literature (literal translation: "subject book"). 👨‍🏫

I forgot to add, we have the adjective "sachlich" to describe non-fictional, serious texts, books, news etc. The opposite would be "unsachlich" which is the literal negation. So I guess it's rather the opposite case in German. 😉

So fiction would fall under "unsachlich", if I'm getting this right? That would be too funny, given the topic!

In theory, yes. But it's a rather negative term, e.g. in a discussion, someone is "unsachlich" if they can't bring up objective arguments. When talking about literature, fiction would be "Belletristik" (from French belles lettres) in contrast to "Sachbuch".
