His passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake. But it's not empty. Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure. Stephen Hawking, RIP 1942-2018.pic.twitter.com/nAanMySqkt

Actually, Resting in Peace would indicate an identity existing beyond death that would be able to "rest" or have a sense of peace. I'm surprised that someone who so often corrects others on science would embrace such a religious viewpoint.

Wait, there’s more. I say “bless you” to sneezes. I say "goodbye" (from God-Be-With-You) to those who leave. I say “Godspeed" to astronaut friends about to launch. And I gleefully use BC & AD. (p.s. I’d bet you use the term “sunrise" even though you know Earth is what turns.)

I was thinking what this guy said. There are a lot of “Metaphysical quaisi-religious references on this post. I really believe we all believe in something more than the physical... I hear “energy, cosmos”, and afterlife references... So RIP AND GOD BLESS!!

Also I wanted to add that my Mom passed away from ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease 20 years ago!! So even though I believe differently than Mr Hawking, I pray for his family’s comfort and wish him God Speed.

But he has mocked people for a lack of scientific perspective on any number of topics, including "Happy New Year." My thought is someone so committed to objective viewpoints wouldn't want to appear to be a hypocrite like that, but maybe I'm wrong.

Why not? Is there something special or transcendent about human grief?

Bluntly, I don't think you're dumb enough to wonder how people view periods of grieving and you certainly don't strike me as someone who ponders deep notions to somehow move humanity forward. You're obviously playing dumb as a tactic, so no thanks. Let's leave it.

Not playing dumb. Genuinely curious how you reconcile the inconsistency of a worldview that claims humans aren’t special, have no transcendent meaning, and are merely piles of meat with empathy and grief upon death.

Not to mention that resting in peace is exactly what the man’s body will be doing. Whether buried or burned to ashes, he is gone and his body will likely soon be resting somewhere peacefully.

i feel the need to apologize for this other man's tweet. say whatever you want Dr Tyson, and state your peace however you see fit. You shouldn't need to justify yourself in mourning of a friend, or at least like minded individual. Hawking was an inspiration to the best of us.
