I disagree. That’s how you experience value in your life. You think work must challenge you to be considered art. I find Georgia O’Keefe’s works satisfying because of the peace they create in me. That doesn’t make her work”not art.”

You could both be right. Maybe after the challenging disruptive initial phase, art becomes comforting (or boring), thus transforming to the entertainment phase? Or could be art for ‘creators’ must be disruptive & challenging; yet different for others, they just wish to enjoy it.

What do you know? That's Neil deGrasse Tyson, you're Just Some Guy!

Last time I checked his degree wasn't in art.

It's a joke, buddy. His Twitter handle is "Just Some Guy."

I could not disagree more. So many creative endevors, specifically in pop culture, are discredited and looked down as as not being "real art" because it's made purely with enjoyment in mind, despite taking exactly as much time, effort, skill, talent, etc. as "real art." (1/5)

The idea that art has to make a statement, push an idea, etc. in order to be valid or worthwhile is incredibly reductive and frankly elitist. A doodle by a young, beginning artist is art just as much as any painting in a gallery, even if it doesn't get as much visibility... (2/5)

...or recognition. This idea that only certain things count as art, that only people who are "saying something challenging" are important and worthy of praise and attention, is dismissive of so many skilled, hard-working people, and so, so discouraging to aspiring... (3/5)

...creators. They think that if they don't make something profound, they shouldn't create at all. After all, people won't respect them for it. They'll just belittle and dismiss them, and all of their hard work. There's nothing wrong with making things simply for enjoyment. (4/5)

There's nothing inherantly lesser about making something fun just for the sake of fun. (5/5)

Also the beauty of art is that it's subjective, so a piece can easily challenge one person while not challenging another at all. Comedy is probably the best way to demonstrate that this is incorrect; it's clearly in the entertainment column, but it often challenges as well.

They don't exist as mutually exclusive concepts. I would argue that all creative works are art, all fun activities/pictures/items are entertainment, and there are plenty of things that are both art and entertainment. It's a venn diagram, not a binary.
