Actually, "y'all" is both singular and plural. "All y'all" is all inclusive, not just plural.

No. Y'all is not singular. It is plural.
-
Begging your pardon, but it can absolutely be used when addressing a single individual.
-
Not if you know how to use it correctly, it can't. Now you may have heard Southerners say how are y'all to a single individual but in that case they were inquiring about the person's family or some larger group. I mean, honey, it has the word "all" in it, bless your heart.
-
Oh no the dreaded "bless your heart " y'all are in trouble now
-
"Y'all" should never be used to address one person - unless, as Terena Bell points out, you are actually inquiring about that person's family, Sunday School class, bowling league, etc. If "y'all" is used to address an individual, you can be sure the speaker is a Yankee.
-
Or someone from California. And the proper response is "Bless your heart."
-
Californians using “y’all” incorrectly are southern imposters; Real Californians use “dude” in both singular and plural context

As a Canadian, I learned this many years ago when traveling in the South and trying to understand the local accent while also explaining the electric plug sticking out the front of my car...
-
Oh those plugs would have been popular this week...Instead local news outlets were giving tips on getting in a frozen car, scraping a windshield (DON'T USE BOILING WATER!)
-
Yikes! Yes, it's been -28 and below here (that's -18 F), and the cars are not starting if they aren't plugged in.
-
We freak out if it freezes for 4 hrs straight. Overpasses and single-lane 'flyovers' are not built for ice driving.

Meanwhile, because I walk to work I added these to my boots...pic.twitter.com/vP1OdCY3It

where i grew up it was all y'alls
-
That's plural possessive: "Y'all get all y'all's cars off my lawn!"
-
No - all y’alls is different than all y’all’s — like “When are all y’alls going to get all y’all’s shit off my lawn”
-
but I’m from Maryland which is on the margins of the y’all belt so we may do it wrong
-
Maybe this is some hybrid formed by "youse"-speaking Pennsylvanians introgressing.
-
Native Southerner living in western PA here...it’s “yinz” in these parts.
-
In So. IL there's a number of people who say "y'all" and a number who say "you'uns" which sounds like "yoontz"
-
When I was learning Dutch teacher kept saying English doesn’t have a way to distinguish 2nd person singular & plural - and I kept telling her she was wrong - y’all is just that - even sounds like Dutch version which is jullie pronounced you-lee
