Likely half of all cave people died by age 12 from now-preventable causes. Insight not lost on the @NewYorker's Alex Gregory.pic.twitter.com/LpxrwwGqF3

Sir, while it may be true that almost half died young, that doesn't mean "nobody live[d] past thirty." Modal life span for Homo sapiens is around 70 years. Infant mortality skews AVERAGE, not max life span. Science!

The cartoon isn’t meant to be a thesis on human longevity, it’s a joke haha. Plus it’s not just “infant mortality” despite that being probably the single biggest factor (given the fragility of infants).

Its not a joke. It is an ignorant attack on healthier lifestyles.

It’s not an “attack” it’s a simple statement that the healthiest lifestyle doesn’t mean dick if you split your leg open and don’t have antibiotics to prevent blood poisoning.

Medical science is why humans live longer now than ever before. Proper nutrition and exercise is great for adding a couple more years and improving quality of life, but that’s irrelevant if you don’t have things like surgical treatments for people with congenital heart defects

The scary thing is how little money is going in to antibiotic research. If the WHO is right humans could lose access to modern medicine in the next 20 years. Imagine no surgery, no catheters inserting shunt, not even minor procedures without almost certain death from infection.

Yes, both vaccines and antibiotics are woefully lacking in the funding department and this is of great concern to anyone paying attention.
