Total Solar Eclipses occur somewhere on Earth every two years, or so. So just calm yourself when people tell you they're rare

But the last solar eclipse that was seen from the North American continent was 38 years ago, so to some they are rare☺️

FYI: The Olympics moves around the world almost as much as eclipses, and with the same frequency, yet nobody calls them rare.

Honestly I respected his outreach but this is just ridiculous. He has some sort of complex to just "correct," thing that don't need to be.

FYI: Between now and the end of the century on Earth, there will be 57 more total solar eclipses, but only 42 Olympics.

Feels silly having pedantic discussion with a great mind such as yours, but how many of those are accessible to people alive today?

Kinda astonishing that the guy who helped create a series like the Cosmos thinks that total solar eclipse is comparable to the Olympics

Olympics is just one of a several sporting events. Total solar eclipse is a show put on by the nature-an astonishing coincidence of physics

Maybe the idea is to stick to the facts and logic and not be swept by the sheer romance of it. Probably better to advance the science?

But for lay people this is definitely the closest most will ever come to experiencing an astronomical phenomenon. Hard not to get excited.

NASA is the one he was initially attacking with his patronizing remarks - does NASA not know what they’re talking about? These are subjective opinions - whether to be excited about what is deemed a rare phenomenon on certain criteria. Criteria Niel is choosing to ignore.

It's the occurence, location, and duration of <2 min which makes it rare. People should have been excited. It was a rare opportunity indeed.
