Neil, this is so photoshopped! The much higher resolution moon was composited in against a lower resolution, higher noise foreground.

If it was facing west, it was probably Venus. (At least at my Geographical location). And Jupiter if it was facing SE.

That was most likely Venus, since it's facing NW at my latitude at the time of day that totality occurred.
