But the last solar eclipse that was seen from the North American continent was 38 years ago, so to some they are rare

FYI: The Olympics moves around the world almost as much as eclipses, and with the same frequency, yet nobody calls them rare.
-
True! Never have had the opportunity to see that either. All around the world but if you do not have money to travel it is rare to see.

I want to be able to debate on the internet with as much etiquette as you Kenzie! Also this is special to a lot of us. I'm pumped!

I like you and everything but sometimes you come across Like a pompous ass. Do you want people excited about our solar system or not?
-
Odd that we live in a time where telling people what is true in the face of what is false comes across as being a pompous ass
-
No, deliberately missing the point (eclipses are rare *in any given place* on earth) to make a technical correction does.

C'mon, most people can't travel the globe chasing eclipses. If you live close to totality for this one, it's a can't-miss opportunity!
-
A 50-year-old living now likely has three more chances to see a total eclipse in the US in their lifetime: 2024, 2044, and 2045.
-
The last of these will only barely touch Montana and North Dakota. The eclipses may be common, but the opportunities to catch them are rare.
-
Moreover, the experience is utterly unique. A 90% partial is nowhere near 90% as good as a total eclipse. Unmissable if you get the chance.

Shameless plug, for those who've made it this far in the thread: Our video on why it's worth traveling to see ithttps://youtu.be/Z_5IuzNIQSI -
"Worth traveling 2 see it" I agree. But nothing says THAT traveling needs not be outside the country, in which case .. See Dr Tyson's point
-
Fair point; well said. I guess that's what he meant, but I knew folks who took it as "nbd, I'll see one in 2 years." Just wanted to clarify.
-
Thanks for helping me see where he was coming from.

I keep telling these dummies who are excited they can see this one from their house that they can just go to Paraguay on a Tuesday in 2019

I was really excited about this and wanted to learn more about astrophysics, but then I saw this tweet and realized it's lame. Thanks, Neil!

Yes Neil, we know you're the smartest guy on twitter, now let the rest of us peasants have our fun
