          It also wasn't really lost in the "dark ages", especially as "the dark ages" aren't really accepted these days by historians. Columbus knew the earth was round, most people believed it was they had for hundreds of years before. The debate was over how big it was.

          GrecoRoman science seems, according to @RichardCCarrier, to have had a pretty good handle on the shape and size of Earth. How forgotten that was in the Fifteenth Century may be another matter.
