@neiltyson @starwars BB-8 is a real robot created by the SW set engineers, no? Why didn't it skid uncontrollably on set?

@Superdonaldo@neiltyson BB-8 is very much a real robot with puppeteers. There were a few that did different scenes:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqSOo5reNO8 … -
@starwars@Superdonaldo BB-8 is much better at being a real robot than@neiltyson is at playing a scientist on TV

@neiltyson@starwars what if it wasn't real sand and the coefficient of friction was really high at each point of the sphere? -
@Urvi_Bhatnagar@starwars That would work, or if the sand is real, but makes a thin layer atop a sold surface. -
@neiltyson@starwars good point. Hopefully it self cleans to allow for friction to do its job! - 1 more reply

@neiltyson Well, BB-8 was a practical unit and it did roll over the sand. Must have had enough texture to the sphere to avoid that problem. - 1 more reply

@neiltyson @VinceNotVance@starwars How is this impacted (or not) by the grooves in his hull? -
@redlianak Joke's on neil, Liana, since BB-8 is a practical effect / actual robot that actually did all those scenes. -
@JonBolds Is it wrong that the "let's shit on fantasy for science" schtick has gotten old for me? -
@redlianak@JonBolds Star Wars has always been Science Fantasy, and never claimed to be "hard" SciFi. Some suspension has to be accepted. -
@theknave69@JonBolds Yeah I agree. That's why I don't like midichlorians. It falls into the uncanny valley of hard/soft sci-fi. -
@redlianak@JonBolds I don't think you're alone in not liking the omnipresent parasites. Not spoilerish, but was content with Awakens.
