@chucknicecomic FYI: An airplane whose engine fails is a glider. A helicopter whose engine fails is a brick.

@neiltyson Although that's a markedly clear distinction, the inevitable outcome is normally the same...one just gets to it faster. :-)

.@neiltyson helicopter pilots use a technique called "Autorotation" during an engine loss. I made a video about it.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k7u8m0Qpn38 …

I fly helicopters for a living. You have no idea how a tweet like this from an "authority" like you pisses me off. Be ashamed.

@neiltyson @chucknicecomic Actually, a helicopter whose engine fails is an autogyro, and can use autorotation to make an emergency landing

Seriously? Can you possibly be that clueless about helicopter aerodynamics? Look up autorotation. Stop spreading misinformation.

@neiltyson @chucknicecomic not exactly true. Helicopters can auto-rotate, which is a form of gliding. Combat jets become bricks ;-)

Actually, most helos can "autorotate," and "glide" for a surprisingly long time to a very gentle touchdown.
