Planes fly between 500 & 650 mph, so east-west sunset flights don't freeze the Sun, but they beautifully prolong twilight.

@neiltyson 11 hours from San Francisco to Shanghai. Sun never set. 13 hours from Shanghai to Chicago. Night lasted about 6 hours. :-)

@neiltyson Sadly, it's ten years and a day now that you can't fly faster than that.

@neiltyson shame the Concorde was mothballed, it would be great to watch the sun rise west-east.

@neiltyson That's a relief, because we need the Sun to not be frozen, cuz, y'know... heat.

@neiltyson It’s all a question of latitude. I’ve flown from Frankfurt to San Francisco over Nunavut, with a beautiful sunset the whole way.

@neiltyson I recommend flying Milan --> Dublin to see an extended sun set behind the Swiss Alps. Absolutely breathtaking.

@neiltyson At the equator, time zones are about 1k miles, to cross one every hour, your plane would have to fly at over 1,000 miles per hour

@neiltyson If you flew at a high or low enough lattitude, 650 mph would work wouldn't it?
