@neiltyson @Comic_Con not if the photons are sufficiently high energy. Then the cross section is large.

@ProfBrianCox@Comic_Con But then the photons interact, creating particle pairs that escape, diminishing the saber energy. -
@neiltyson@Comic_Con but the charged particles produced could be magnetically contained. - 1 more reply

@neiltyson What if it was plasma encased in a magnetic field? (As some have described them.) -
@philtastic Would work as advertised - magnetic fields don't cross. But then it's a plasma saber and not a light saber. -
@neiltyson@philtastic LightSaber was actually the brand name. They are plasma sabers.

@neiltyson@Comic_Con oh come on now you know the Star Wars universe has more thorough explanations than that. They're tubes of plasma.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@neiltyson@Comic_Con You can blame the marketing department. They're called lightsabers because they're less filling. -
@lyquoc@neiltyson@Comic_Con tell that to Qui-Gon Jinn. Filled his stomach pretty well.

@neiltyson The lightsaber consists of a blade of pure plasma emitted from the hilt and suspended in a force containment field,not light :-) -
@TiredTroglodyte@neiltyson And only a lightsaber can cut through another lightsaber :-) -
@redzeppelin7@neiltyson i sense a fellow star wars fan.#Unagi. I'm always aware. -
@TiredTroglodyte I had you down as a fellow fan quite early on. I too am seldom unaware. -
@redzeppelin7 birds of a feather..
