@neiltyson @DirigoDuke Careful now, you're near too much O2. I don't think you can handle that kind burn right now.pic.twitter.com/caaLgyFO4A

@neiltyson @dirigoduke Also, the air is mostly nitrogen.
@neiltyson flammable isn't really a word. INflammable means "combustible." Flammable is used b/c it's safer for illiterates. @DirigoDuke
@neiltyson from Elements of Style, on "flammable" http://geoffklock.blogspot.com/2006/09/from-strunk-and-whites-elements-of.html … I know you like facts and stuff... @DirigoDuke
@russlaraway My, don't you feel smart. http://grammarist.com/usage/flammable-inflammable/ …
@DirigoDuke - your ghetto website or Elements of Style? Flammable is a word just as orientate is now a word. You're welcome.
@neiltyson @DirigoDuke Plus, O2 isn’t the most abundant thing in atmosphere. Nitrogen is at 78.09%. O2 is only 20.95%. Then theres others.
@neiltyson @DirigoDuke also, the sky is mostly nitrogen, which suppresses combustion.
“@neiltyson: O2 isn't flammable. It allows other stuff to burn”//how is a cig near a leaking O2 tank going to vaporize someone?
@neiltyson @DirigoDuke look for YouTube video on fastest barbq. They added liquid oxygen and were ready in seconds...
@neiltyson @DirigoDuke Only 21% oxygen by vol., spread over the whole globe, concentration where lightning happens will be relatively low
@neiltyson @DirigoDuke It's called an "oxidiser".
@neiltyson Really? Why dont you take liquid 02 to Titan and smoke a cigarette next to it?
@neiltyson @DirigoDuke O2 is extremely flammable by itself, concentration is very low at higher altitude and diluted with other gas in air
“@neiltyson: .@DirigoDuke If O2 is so flammable why doesn't lightning ignite the sky? // O2 isn't flammable. It allows other stuff to burn”
@neiltyson @DirigoDuke Lightning does ignite the sky. It allows the oxidization of oxygen (into O3) and nitrogen (into NO2).
@neiltyson @DirigoDuke also, the Earth's atmosphere is only about 20 percent oxygen...
