Never figured why the Foul Pole is called the Foul Pole when it's entirely in fair territory. Should be called the Fair Pole.

@neiltyson Not all of the foul pole is always in bounds. Sometimes it's painted 2 different colors and part is in and part is out.

@neiltyson It indicates to us where "foul" begins. We're fairly certain of where "fair" is.

@neiltyson so if the ball "clears" the pole... it was foul....if it bounces back onto the field...GAME ON

@neiltyson The foul pole is named so b/c it is an extension on the foul line. Both the line and the pole would have to be renamed.

@neiltyson because "fair pole" doesn't sound as good... Also, umps yell "foul", never "fair", maybe that's why.

@neiltyson They developed as an extension of the foul line, and both delineate foul territory from the perspective of fair territory.

@neiltyson Yeah, that's an old saying. But it seperates the two airs around it. The pole itself isn't the point really. So either would work
