I’m okay with a US Space Force. But what we need most is a Truth Force — one that defends against all enemies of accurate information, both foreign & domestic.

The way to do this is with free speech and free press, so people can critically evaluate truth for themselves. But this means tolerating the woos as well as the skeptics, Alex Jones as well as Snopes.

Valuable? Yes. Easily corruptible and used for the exact opposite purpose for what you correctly support? Also yes.

Even groups like the NAS need substantial external and open public review (by no one in particular).

Science is truth, not consensus. 98%of scientists agreeing doesn't make truth. Truth is irrefutable.

Trump does not believe in science, so he'll just shut that down, it being a national organization. Journalists aren't beholden. They don't answer to the president.

Honestly as a scientist I find PNAS’ material to read more like an old boys’ club and less like an impartial arbiter of truth. Not to say most of it isn’t very good.

The scientists would have to be able to operate with predetermined biases first and we know most already fail at that

If that "academy" is funded by the government, it will be corrupt within months of it's inception. There are already government funded agencies that distort the truth depending upon who's paying for the "research". The truth is already out there; just have to know where to look.

Because no scientists have ever taken over a journal to be the gatekeepers of what they consider the truth, and keep ideas they politically disagree with out of the peer reviewed process?

The advice would only be impactful for those who take it ....we aren’t living in a moment where science-based objectives are respected or even understood . The only science people want is the science that “proves” their opinions and validates their idea of the world
