The largest Telescope in the world, a mile in circumference, is no longer in the USA. It’s in the Guizhou province of China. So when Aliens say “Hi”, the first humans to receive their signal will be Chinese Astrophysicists.pic.twitter.com/jwtGwngM9P

Science shouldn't be nationalistic. I'd rather it be built in China than not built at all.

At the same time it’s good to realize that the US no longer leads in many areas of science due to decades of neglect

That's a tragedy only in that it's a missed opportunity for science funding, not a missed opportunity for "US leadership".

Every country should try to lead. The US had a strategic advantage that has been squandered. The US is also more likely than anyone to either be a leader in a field or divest completely from it. So the lack of US leadership is a harbinger for the future.

Staging it as a nationalistic race is damaging to the spirit of cooperative science. Science is not the World Cup.

Sure. Congress will say “let’s lean in to strength” and not fund swaths of science because the US isn’t a leader. It’s not a zero sum game.

WEll, China already produces half the knowledge in AI and Cyber. They are also the main contributors in Physics. Apparently, having a public education system that provides high quality education for free instead of a massive defence budget has its perks.

Oh, and they are also building huge ELF array somewhere in the islands of the South China Sea. Another massive project with massive civilian and military impact.
