When we eventually discover life somewhere other than Earth, unless we’re VERY lucky, it will probably show up as some weird chemical imbalance seen in some spectrum of something, which will be difficult to confirm, hard to interpret, and debated back and forth for ages.

Of course, discovering other life will still be tremendously exciting! But unless we get an actual communication signal (also difficult to confirm) or a very clear view of an artificial structure (again, unlikely), it’ll be a slow burn, not an instant eureka moment.

Dr. @neiltyson makes the point that we are made from the most abundant atoms in the universe. Though we could've been based on silicon rather than carbon, the latter is much more prevalent. Do you agree we should expect similar chemical compounds in extraterrestrial life?

Carbon is 10x more abundant than Silicon in the universe. So we are not compelled to appeal to silicon, other than for cool SciFi stories.

Maybe graphene needs a bit more attention that it already has then. Research reveals all... eventually.

But guess what - oxygen is not necessary ! Life on earth began using sulfur, where organisms now use oxygen. And I've understood that both oxygen & sulfur are toxic to cells. Cell respiration is a "clever" way to harness a toxic substance for energy production & at the same
