Trade-offs between *integrated-in-memory* vs *docker-compose* with no(less?) integration overhead ? Why do you prefer integrated in-memory over this? Isn't a principle to be as close to prod in test? This extra code integration for in-memory violates that?

    > You should have at least two physical manifestations of your system: a fully integrated in-memory one for testing, and the real physical deployment. They should be functionally equivalent.

    > Read papers (of the scientific variety). Wait, are there scientific papers about software engineering? (Don't mean ML research)

.. I guess figuring out how much development effort things will take - and deciding if they're worth doing. Possibly 0 or negative utility for the development team (us), but is that true for the entire *business* ?

    > Out of all the agile practices commonly used, estimating task sizes and trying to measure project velocity is the least useful. (Its utility is often less than zero). Wait.. why do we do this? Is it illusion-of-predictability for POs and stakeholders to prioritize?

others ideas usually leads to a decent design. Are you worried about stalemates? Or people's time being wasted? *usefully get involved* is a hint. I know 1 isn't the right answer for optimal # of people designing. How high can this go? What's peak design? xD

    > New systems are best designed by a small numbers of minds, not committees. Once the structure of the system is clear and the main decisions made, more people can usefully get involved How small? I've usually designed systems in groups of up to 8. Building on top of each ...

    > Beware of hyped or fashionable technologies. The fundamentals of computer science and engineering don’t change much over time. Isn't tech just a tool? Just like a more expressive programming language. Fundamentals don't change, but the tools do, I think. (so what's my ques?)

    > if you’re writing JSON or YAML by hand, you’re doing it wrong. How do you use code as data without this? What are the alternatives? Is the code as data paradigm flawed in your thinking?

For ex: Say I'm working with docker + cloud. If I were deploying via my own machines, I'd probs use something like terraform. Why does it being the *same* language make sense?

    > use code to describe the infrastructure of your system, in the same language as the rest of the code. Write code that interprets the description of your system to provision actual physical infrastructure. - everything is code sounds ideal, but how does this work in practice?

Why can't I start my own thread as a comment? Gah. I loved reading this, and I have a few questions. (As thanks for answering them, I'll compile a list of these answers + other most asked questions I can answer)

The sacrifice in memetic theory = Jesus Christ. What makes it so influential is that this story was told via the lens of the sacrifice. Of the entire essay, this was my favourite insight. Nicely done, :D I still can't believe how you connected those two ideas!

This essay by on is excellent: It interprets Christianity in a way I can respect.🤯 I'd recommend starting with this intro to Rene Girard by first though - it helps tie things together!

3\ These thrills are great at being memorable, but that's all they're good at. They usually end up making me feel worse. (eg: clubs) When I write down how great going to the gym is, reading this over the weekend reinforces my belief: I'm doing the right things to make me happy.

2\ But then, I go back to my room and check my notes for the week: which balance the good against the bad. If I didn't have a system to put things in perspective, I would think each week was pretty shit. Which would drive me to seek more memorable thrills.

1\ It's surprising how asymmetric good and bad events are. Every Sunday evening I go for a swim. Post swim, I relax in the jacuzzi thinking about how the week went. Most things that come up are negative. Things that went wrong, things I failed to do, people that upset me.

Started this weekend with an aim to read and close 20 of the 270 open chrome tabs. 48 hours later, am at 290 tabs. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️😭 Content that connects to lots of different things > isolated siloed content? I think so, as long as it's a small world network and not a complete graph.
