When I met him: I was introduced to Sondheim at a @PENamerica event by Meryl Streep (who had no idea who I was apart from being baby Ash's daddy) and so Stephen had no idea who I was, and that was just fine by me. I said shook his hand and said hello, and went back to my table.

There must be a million stories like this about him. At the end of Tick Tick Boom, I thought, so glad we've still got Sondheim. Last year people were even speculating about whether he'd write one more. His work is done.

You do not lose your heroes when they die. The heroic part of them becomes a guiding spirit for you.
