I was lucky, in 1984, to interview William Goldman at the Savoy. He brightened up when I told him that of all his books, I loved The Princess Bride, then his least successful book, the best. A gentleman: he wrote brilliant novels & screenplays & explained Hollywood to the world.

I was this way for a very long time, only having ever seen the movie. Finally picked up the book and absolutely enjoyed it.pic.twitter.com/rSeXrDiULh

The Princess Bride is an a awesome book - I hope people read it as well as watching the film! So very sad such a fabulous wordsmith is not lost to us forever. But what a legacy.

He was pretty good at explaining the world. I remember reading The Princess Bride in my teens and being astonished and so hopeful just because it existed.

I was older (above 50) before I ever read the Princess Bride, and somehow missed the film. But it is a wonderful book and you were right to bring that to his attention.

When I was 15, I carried his book Adventures in the Screen Trade around with me practically everywhere I went, obsessively reading and rereading every chapter until both covers fell off from wear and tear. And then I did exactly the same with my replacement copy, to the same end.

I always felt the film of Stardust had a very similar feel to The Princess Bride, despite the 2 only being quite remotely similar (but both really enjoyable). Sad news to hear of his passing.

I have been telling people (about movies) that Stardust is the 2000s' Princess Bride. I mean it as a compliment to both, of course; I hope none of the authors would be shocked by such a comment…?
