Vocabulary and spelling is not everything........Look at Prince Charles 70 and he still can't get the big job.

Suggestions based on experience: 1. ban mobile phones from classrooms. 2. Ban use of laptops etc. unless needed for specific tasks. FYI, many mobile phone interruptions in classes where phones not controlled are from parents/ grandparents who expect an immediate reply.

Where mobile phones are accessible in classrooms, kids will access them for easy distractions in lessons, thus reinforcing short attention spans. Doesn't help when phones vibrate. Where banned, bored kids go back to drawing on leg with biro (at least he was writing words ...).

I hope she goes to the north-west of Tassie where functional literacy is BELOW 50%

Wholeheartedly agree, being a Handicapped deaf person fastidious about spelling and handwriting, and seemingly powerless to help make a difference is sad.

I’m concerned that labelling kids as ‘digi kids’ makes it sound like they’re responsible for their deficient education: let’s ensure the responsibility is sheeted home to where it needs to go.

Honestly I don't have that many kids. But seriously when I was a teacher I taught Year 7 English. I could tell what primary school they came from due to their literacy levels. Something is definitely wrong with how we approach literacy on a state and national level.

Data generally indicates (of course exceptions are there) that academic achievement correlates with social/economic factors. Things outside the influence of school. Want to raise achievement in schools? Reduce inequality, poverty and provide adequate social supports - for decades
