For the first time in ages I plugged my genesis in using composite and wow, dithering really does work to fake transparency sometimes. You absolutely cannot tell this isn't transparency.

Here's what it looks like in an emulator, every other line is red. That creates the illusion of transparency when run through lower quality output whose colors bleed into each other.

The lines are absolutely invisible via composite on a crt even if you're looking for them. Wild stuff.

You can also see there's dithered transparency behind the scrolling text. Looks like a shadow box on my crt though!

Is there a reason why recreating this effect in emulators for the wii etc wouldn't be doable?

There are some decent-ish filters now but it has taken 20+ years of work to even get close, and they're still not all the way there. Though part of that is lack of interest I think!

Yeah, that looks about right! It's real impressive - I'm going to try adventures of batman and robin next

Man I haven't hooked up my Genesis via composite in ages either. I really love this effect and it's definitely more comfy but the rainbowing etc. from composite and RF still really bug me for whatever reason now. I mean it's not like I noticed any of that as a kid?
