Since 1947, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has been dedicated to the conservation and sustainability of the state’s fish and wildlife resources.
The green area is where alligators can be found in North Carolina.
In other words...the further you go into the green area, the higher probability of one seeing you later.
I love how you've gotten to the point that you can take time away from wildlife stuff to workshop your Mitch Hedberg-esque standup routine. This is the dream.
Regarding The Twelve Days of Christmas...
If someone keeps unloading birds on you and calling them gifts, they are probably not your "true love" and a restraining order might be the best present you get that year.
Over the weekend, we asked a guy who was fishing without a license if he had a police record.
He said no, but he does have some of Sting's solo albums.
Happy Monday.

The Eastern milksnake is one of many snakes in North Carolina that don't give birth to live young (unlike copperheads).
In other words...
My milksnake brings all the eggs to the yard.
(I'm sorry. It had to be done.)

Don't feed Crocs to gators.
In fact, don't feed them anything. It causes them to associate humans with an easy meal, which could lead to dangerous situations. Plus, it's against the law.
So...okay?

If you're ever in a position to safely help a turtle on the road, be sure to pick it up by the back of the shell with two hands, placing it well away from the road in the direction it was traveling.
Ever seen a flock of birds flying in that "V" formation and wondered why one side was longer than the other?
Science tells us that the longer side has more birds on it.
If people keep telling you, "but you're a catch!?"
...know that you are a valuable, endangered species and that's probably why you keep getting thrown back into the ocean.
Seeing foxes around your neighborhood, even during the day? If so, it is likely because kit-rearing season is upon us. Young foxes are maturing and spending more time outside of the den, making sightings of them and adult foxes more likely. Learn more: http://bit.ly/2UwD1Q8
If you observe an armadillo in the wild, please participate in the NC Armadillo (http://bit.ly/3KR7FhM) project by uploading and sharing your photos or download the iNaturalist app, available for iPhone and Android.
This is an extraordinary photo of an elk, a copperhead, a rabbit, a brook trout and a wildlife officer all in the same place. It's a shame Twitter isn't working and you can't see it.
Wild parents can’t hire a babysitter and it is normal for many species to leave their young unattended for long periods. Never assume young wildlife has been abandoned or orphaned just because you don’t see a parent nearby.
- Pull over safely.
- Move the turtle in the direction it was headed.
- Pick it up by the back of the shell with two hands.
- Watch out for the claws and bitey parts.
- Pat yourself on the back for being a friend of turtles.
- Have a cupcake or something. You earned it.
Ever wonder why you see Canada geese in the Walmart parking lot?
A recent study (conducted by me) found that these birds are attracted to great selections and competitive prices.
Eighteen new recruits began their journey to become a wildlife law enforcement officers on Jan. 3 with plans to graduate on July 18. All recruits will complete Basic Law Enforcement Training, and then will focus on specialized training specific to Wildlife Law Enforcement.
Does this fellow look familiar? A Painted Bunting is once again visiting a backyard feeder in Winston-Salem, almost a year after a similar bird (maybe the same one?) spent a week at the exact same feeder.
New wildlife themed email signoffs just dropped:
Thank ewe,
Best fishes,
Excited to bait and tackle this challenge with you,
Time to scoot, little newt,
Watch out for geese,
This time of year, bears are very resourceful in finding shelter to raise their young. If you stumble upon a bear den occupied by a cub by its lonesome, the best action is to leave it alone. It’s likely waiting for its mother to return from foraging and exploring.
