Cowboys typically moved a herd of cattle anywhere from 10-12 miles a day comfortably. Cookie also had to cover the same distance, but with a wagon.  Cookie will always be a hero in our eyes!

Cookie would store the cowboy’s bedrolls on the chuck wagon during the day. He would drive along after breakfast was cleaned up and make the evening camp. The cowboys would eat supper and then grab their bedrolls for the night.

Two rode swing (they rode behind the point cowboys a little ways back).  Two rode flank (they rode behind the swing cowboys a little ways back).  Three rode drag (they brought up the end of the herd and this was the dirtiest job of all).

Larger drives might have employed more, but a typical cattle drive had 10 cowboys:  One was the wrangler (he rode on the side and took care of the horses).  Two rode point (they rode on each side at the front of the herd).

Biscuits were an important part of the cowboy diet – probably considered one of the most important staples. Cookie would prepare biscuits in the Dutch Oven and serve them to the hungry cowboys.
