You couldn't do this in the US: The National Association for the Deaf would sue you for violating the ADA for not providing human-created subtitles on all episodes. And the DOJ would back them up with nastygrams.https://twitter.com/RFERL/status/1056153538701729792 …

Have you suggested to
@lessig that he have someone look at how to fix this? It does seem like a waste. -
It would take a legal change in Congress to expressly weaken the ADA.

Yup I was saying the same thing earlier. It’s like the NAD fucked this up for everyone involved so we can’t take solace in the fact thinking “meh it’s Harvard and MIT they have money”.https://twitter.com/pvineetha/status/1056566824681246721?s=21 …
-
Crowdsourcing would be great, but... the great and hallowed halls of academia might be not up for that.
-
They’re open sourced under licenses like CC-BY-NC-ND. So am not sure what the hallowed halls of academia could do if people captioned them. From my understanding they would’ve actually been happier if that had happened instead of them getting sued:https://twitter.com/pvineetha/status/1056578998891876354?s=21 …

Then I am entirely befuddled.
-
This is exactly why I was taking the time to explain the situation when people were saying “Harvard and MIT have money they can afford to caption this stuff”. Because that really is not the issue here at all. The issue is NAD suing them and fucking it up for everyone involved.
-
A related question is what NAD are really after. Are the captions really that bad? (Possibly; we watch DVDs with captions turned on, and many programs contain howlers.) Have the auto-captioners reached out to NAD? How has NAD responded?
-
By “auto captioners” you mean the companies who provide captioning software? I don’t think they contacted NAD but I also didn’t bother diligently following up because this was a dick move and I wasn’t up for wading through shit. Someone masochistic should look through case file.
-
I haven't followed it up enough to understand whether the lawsuit is justified. Maybe if the bus isn't too crowded.

What are the lectures about? I'd be down to help captioning them if you have the bandwidth and they are on a topic of interest for me.
