Today, Islamophobe Kevin J. Johnston was ordered to pay $2.5 million in damages for defamatory & Islamophobic attacks on Fakih online. This case highlights to us the need for better government strategies to study and actively challenge online hate at the wider systemic level.

Harper government’s repeal of s. 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act in 2013 came at worst time as online hate was just getting started. S. 13 allowed the Canadian Human Rights Commission to investigate online hate speech and order it removed on lower than criminal standard.
