I sometimes wonder if we'd all do better to just drop "elite" from our vocabularies when talking about politics. It seems like it consistently makes things less clear.https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1366195478992412681 …

Sorry if this is a bit random, but the fact that Biden easily won the Democratic primary despite having little support from blue-checkmark liberal elites is something that ought to have been a pretty big wake-up call but doesn't seem to have been.

Biden had a lot of support from people with a lot of influence in the party, which was hugely helpful to him.

he had relatively little support among people in journalism who spend a good bit of time on twitter (like me!)

that certainly says something about twitter demographics—probably mainly that the site leans more left than the population as a whole, and perhaps that it leans younger.

that's certainly worth remembering. but the lesson isn't really, "biden is the populist choice of the people and left commenters on twitter are out of touch elitists" which is where Nate's tweet points (perhaps somewhat inadvertently.)

people replying to the tweet saying Biden rigged the election or that it was somehow unfair for other pols to endorse him...that's still a really bad take.

Biden had more support than I thought he would, in part because I hoped he'd have less, because I don't like his policies and don't trust him very much.

that doesn't mean he cheated or was elected illegitimately though. politicians I don't like often win. it sucks, but there it is.

I think it's extremely counterproductive for the left to continually tell ourselves that the DNC is somehow mystically rigging all the primaries.

they're not rigged, first of all, and leftists convincing themselves they are is a good formula for discouraging leftists from showing up to primaries.

relatedly, it's awfully hard to strategize and learn from mistakes if you're constantly focusing on how you were done wrong rather than on what you can do to win more votes next time.

I mean, there's lots of things you can do that don't involve electoral politics, obviously. but it'd probably be worth thinking about some folks who aren't Sanders who might run and maybe win on the left next time.
