Biden won because of his strength with Black voters and the Democratic base. He led in endorsements throughout, which turned out to be a really significant factor. Which dem electeds are going to abandon Biden for Romney?

switching parties is really dicey at the best of times because you have to convince voters you're sincere. switching in March to try to take on a crowded, strong democratic field? it would have been suicide. he would have been lucky to do as well as Marianne Williamson.

Sanders losing doesn't mean that most Democrats want to vote for Republicans. It kind of means they want to vote for people who unapologetically and consistently identify as Democrats, which would really not be Romney.

(I think Sanders is a Dem for most purposes, but I think his flirtation with anti Dem messaging may well have hurt him.)

I think people just consistently underestimate how much partisanship matters to most voters. It's the single most powerful determinant of how people vote.

it's way more important than policy positions. "you are really a republican" would have been a devastating attack on Romney if he had switched parties to run as a dem at the last minute.

Yeah, that take is nonsense. Especially with a March start! He wouldn't even have been eligible, most of the primaries would have been over and he couldn't have gotten on the ballot for the rest.

I don't know who would have gone for Romney but who also rejected Mike Bloomberg.
