I also think it would be great if the money were specifically given to the kids and not their parents. young people need money of their own, desperately, since parents can be abusive. govt accounts kids can access w/o parents would be really useful.

A mistake a lot of left commentators make is identifying SNAP, etc, given to working families as "corporate welfare" when it's really only dependents making many of those people eligible.

It's true that dependents not being part of the equation is a massive problem, but "poverty is not driven by low pay/unemployment" is so wrong it wipes the rest out

It’s fine as a policy suggestion; the idea of providing financial support to kids (for example) is both morally and politically strong. The challenge is the accidental implicature of the setup, because low pay and unemployment are drivers of poverty, just a few among many.

I am not against the policy implied by this but it's factually not true that single working people with no dependents can make an adequate living with minimum wage in many places. We need higher wages too.
