LRT: the thing is that person got to write that story specifically because she'd written shitty stories in the past,right? theAtlantic would have been less inclined to assign her the story if she had never been in high profile venues

magazines generally want feature stories that are scandalous and too good/bad to be true, because that gets a lot of attention. that creates some perverse incentives.
