Conor deeply believes that all the best decisions and insights come from powerful pundits. He thinks everyone who is not a powerful pundit should defer to him and is class, and they will fix everything. https://www.patreon.com/posts/chattering-class-17514041 …pic.twitter.com/Hs2NtJnv8x

Conor deeply distrusts direct action, and any effort at change that is not good, reliable, elite punditry. that's why he keeps writing the same essay about how the GOP needs to abandon trump over and over. punditry! it will change everything!

there are many pundits more evil than Conor. few are more annoying though, because few are as condescending, or as dismissive of the actions of those who aren't pundits—which is, after all, most people!

there is just no way in hell Conor would have supported MLK. He is the embodiment of the Letter from Birmingham Jail liberal crying, "wait, now! hold on! let's write another op ed about how racism is bad and suddenly sheriffs in Mississippi will see the light..."

like, the purity of the self-regard here is kind of amazing. "welp, collective action in a beloved industry affecting wealthy management will have no effect. time to write another piece for the Atlantic appealing to the GOP and watch that transformative change occur!"pic.twitter.com/YRYuEmNBpx

the infuriating thing is his pretense that he gives a shit and is just asking questions about how best to proceed. Like, this is a peaceful work stoppage in a non-essential but high profile industry. what exactly is the downside? what is the cost of solidarity here?

he couldn't say more clearly that people should never do anything. no one should ever take even the smallest step to try to cause change. write punditry. maybe vote for your betters. that's all your allowed to do.

in sum, the first rule for being a good pundit is to realize that pundits are not the ones who change the world. don't get too high on your own supply or you turn into Friedersdorf, which is a repulsive development.
