there are a lot of ways to criticize someone in a way designed to prevent them getting harassment. Jesse said Emily lied. He said she was trying to get Matt fired, though she said she admired matt and did not want him fired.

if he didn't want her to get harassment, he should have presumed good faith. it's also helpful to say, "don't harass this person", or to say, "this is an example of the free speech I was talking about. I disagree for reason x."

you can also screenshot rather than QT. You can subtweet. But the big thing is treating it as a collegial disagreement, rather than calling her a liar who is an example of everything wrong with discourse online.

this is especially important when you are dealing with someone who is trans. Trans people are hated and despised by huge numbers of people. It's easy to direct hate mobs at them. Jesse claims he knows trans ppl are discriminate against. He rarely acts like he does.

It's good he's deleting the tweet, and good he's condemning harassment. But his deflection of responsibility is gross.

also, no discussion there that I can see about how he got Katelyn Burns fired. which seems relevant to this discussion.

another thing you can do if you don't want to direct hate mobs at trans people is that you can not spend years cultivating an audience of transphobes and misogynists.

I mean, it is good that he has said don't harass her; that may help a little. but he's not taking responsibility. he's blaming it on "the discourse" and "the social media."

a sure way to direct a hate mob at someone is to state or imply that they are weaponizing their marginalized identity to illegitimately destroy some good non marginalized person.

that narrative of mainstream victimization is incredibly volatile. it is literally responsible for some of the worst atrocities in history. and on social media it is guaranteed to be red meat for the worst of all possible people.

the worst online harassment I have ever gotten was when people decided I was illegitimately accusing someone of antisemitism. (this was a left dogpile, fwiw.)

so...not that Jesse listens to me or is going to read this, but in future if he doesn't want to target people for death threats, it would be worth considering that dynamic.

Most everyone who read that list of signatories yesterday had Singal at or near the top of their lists of people quickest to show themselves as a hypocritical asswipe, and in that way at least, he did not disappoint.
