I talked to @sarahthemoose and @KateDAdamo for this.https://www.mic.com/p/how-super-bowl-sex-trafficking-myths-hurt-actual-sex-workers-21765426 …

pretty much everyone agrees now that sex trafficking does not increase around sporting events. Sarah has a good explanation why; expensive sporting events are things where people have spent all their money on sports, which is their planned entertainment.https://www.mic.com/p/how-super-bowl-sex-trafficking-myths-hurt-actual-sex-workers-21765426 …

the kind of labor exploitation that does occur at sporting events is construction and service industry related, not sex. Florida doesn't even have a department of labor though; they aggressively don't care about that kind of trafficking.https://www.mic.com/p/how-super-bowl-sex-trafficking-myths-hurt-actual-sex-workers-21765426 …

authorities tend to put money into stings and arrests. it's mostly about targeting and terrorizing consensual sex workers, not about rescuing victims.https://www.mic.com/p/how-super-bowl-sex-trafficking-myths-hurt-actual-sex-workers-21765426 …

media folks especially should stop writing these moral panic articles. they're harmful.https://www.mic.com/p/how-super-bowl-sex-trafficking-myths-hurt-actual-sex-workers-21765426 …

even the Polaris Project admits that the Super Bowl sex trafficking stories are a myth! nobody who knows anything thinks this is happening, but Florida put a ton of money into ads, billboards, paying LE to deal with this problem that doesn't exist.https://www.mic.com/p/how-super-bowl-sex-trafficking-myths-hurt-actual-sex-workers-21765426 …

governments like denouncing trafficking because it makes them the heroes in simplistic melodramas, I think. Everybody hates sex trafficking; stories of police busting evil traffickers feel good and right and are exciting and somewhat prurient. it's got everything.

whereas stories about hotels underpaying employees around events...complain about that and you're some kind of commie.https://www.mic.com/p/how-super-bowl-sex-trafficking-myths-hurt-actual-sex-workers-21765426 …

just to emphasize again, as Kate pointed out, FLORIDA DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A DEPARTMENT OF LABOR! the state refuses to even put minimal infrastructure in place to deal with labor violations and help people advocate for themselves.

but they're willing to dump a bunch of money into useless billboards and paying cops to go harass marginalized people over nothing.
