This is indigenous people’s reality. We are forced as children to watch our white counterparts reenact their ancestors stealing our land https://twitter.com/nadiadekoch/status/1119363176200572928 …

Oklahoma has been a fucking disaster ever since white settlers came and especially since statehood. We have a very unique history and if you are not native or even if you are but you are not from Oklahoma, you need to learn about the atrocities against Native and Black folk here

Indian Territory was and is an atrocity. It’s nice to have cousins from 40+ tribal nations around, but it’s also a constant reminder of all that our ancestors have had stripped from them and by extension, what we are missing of our homelands and pre-contact cultures

White settlers have had a horrible affect on our environment in Oklahoma. We’re known as the Oil capitol of the world, but the desire for oil is causing earthquakes and issues with our water quality. We can’t drink oil.pic.twitter.com/otuPjwIsDZ

Learn about the history of Black people in this state, too. Natives don’t have clean hands. Many Black people enslaved by Natives travelled on the Trail of Tears in exchange for their freedom. (Much much more on this at the Seminole Nation Museum in Wewoka)

But many Black people fled Southern states to establish all-Black towns here in OK. For example, Boley, Wewoka, Clearview, Langston, Tullahussee, and many more. Many Black folk settled in Native settlements as well. There was also a significant Black cowboy culture.

Video: children dressed in colonial outfits, pulling mini covered wagons, picking a spot and waving their flags. Most children are white, although a few Black and brown children are seen throughout the video. The children are stoked and the teachers whooping and cheering.

I never realized this til much later. I've seen many re-enactments, glorifications all of wild west "pioneers," who were always portrayed as "the good guys."
