often it seems newsletters are just part of a sales funnel, whether they are written by individuals or corporations. I don’t think you’re selling anything (if you are, I have some bad news). you provide insights into topics I’m interested in. but what is your motivation?

just to be clear, I’m not saying “if it makes you no money, why bother.” there are plenty of good reasons to bother, but I’m curious which of those are yours

Good q! It's a two-sided market, I think. Not selling anything directly to readers, but reputation converts to capital elsewhere (I've made a living indirectly from writing for the past 5+ yrs)

“Friends (good ones, anyway) don’t hang out with you because they need something in return. They’re there because they weirdly fell in love with what you’re doing, and they want to see you succeed.” Thanks for sharing

Perfect tie in with The Little Prince, subscribed! So you end with a question. Curious what you think is a better paradigm for patronage? Something like The Guardian's pay-what-you-want?
