Definitely thought-provoking, but I found the comparison between Dorsey & Zuck a bit off; first, because I'm not sure Dorsey is well-liked either, and second, because Twitter is definitely not as successful as FB. How else do you think shamelessness applies to him?

Agree on both counts! Was originally gonna use Elon, but Jack's intriguing bc he seems to be re-entering the public eye lately (tweets + media interviews), and his intentions are still not well understood
-
Right now his comments are being met with derision, but my hunch is he's just early on the "Elon curve" but following the same strategy

Really liked the essay! Do you think there is a difference between the shamelessness that is practiced by Paris Hilton vs the shamelessness that is encouraged by social media? It seems that people have to be at least a little shameless to generate an online following
-
Thanks! Yes, I think the distinction is self-promotion vs. shock factor, which perhaps "shameless" doesn't adequately capture. In Paris's case, it's about doing the opposite of what's expected, vs. merely being assertive
-
Which leads to suggest that the dominant/optimal strategy is often the counterintuitive approach - so over time we are left see-sawing between two key strategies as they move in/out of vogue. Plus, there’s less downside risk when coming from obscurity. Great essay,
@nayafia !

"I’m not really sure what the long-term implications of shamelessness will be." Made me think of psychopathy (not exactly the same), which is often considered an unstable modality because of the need to *constantly* change environments, post-action.

Jon Ronson has a great chapter about this in ‘So you’ve been publicly shamed’; he interviews a US representative (Ted Poe) who seems to employ this exact strategy to great effect.
