This means whoever has most power / status / prestige can use the situation to their advantage. Earlier kings used to create money, now its intellectuals and VCs. Whoever dissents gets punished (in one way or another).

Money has always been part of a larger faith system. At the end of the day, it's a promise/story there's someone else who values the currency more than the thing you want from them. Otherwise trade would suck.

Religion is shared faith in a propagated story. Without faith you lose propagation and without propagation you betray *the promise* for the faithful. This is a chicken/egg solved. Though spreading faith has the lossy-ness of playing telephone even with the written word.
