If you’re only reading books recommended by industry peers (e.g. Sapiens)—you have no edge.

Isn't edge all about different interpretations of same facts which inturn comes by multidisciplinary reading and builds and leads to network effect.

If you are reading you have an edge already. Dismissal of books accepted by that field’s “experts” is dismissal of the edge they have worked so hard to obtain. We must leverage their expertise to save our time. What you do with this knowledge is your choice.

Reading is merely a surrogate for thinking for yourself; it means letting someone else direct your thoughts. Many books, moreover, serve merely to show how many ways there are of being wrong, and how far astray you yourself would go if you followed their guidance. A Schopenhauer

My hot take is that 15 related books and 2 years of thinking later, Sapiens is an excellent entrypoint to abstracted self awareness and that as long as you use it as an entry point, it holds up

I like how @wolfejosh thinks about this. You have to read whatever everyone else is reading - that’s table-stakes. Your edge comes from whatever everyone is _not_ reading or ignoring. It really is so true. Doesn’t just apply to VC. If you were, say, a ML researcher, this holds.

Having an edge assumes action. Let’s be honest, few have deep reading comprehension and still fewer put that comprehension to work.
