Meditation is intermittent fasting for the mind. Too much sugar leads to a heavy body, and too many distractions lead to a heavy mind. Time spent undistracted and alone, in self-examination, journaling, meditation, resolves the unresolved and takes us from mentally fat to fit.

in the mountains, higher levels, i found a few times absolutely loneliness and absolute silence. especially the latter is an insane experience.

I never understood the type of returns one gets from meditation. I hear about a clean head and all I can associate it is the feeling of peace when in nature. Is it that? I don't really understand how one realizes he's "there" (of course there's no endgame but has made progress).

If you take pleasure in thought. You’ll realise that sometimes the greatest pleasure of all can be derived in thinking nothing.

People fear the places the undistracted mind might wander too. Much of what people describe as boredom is in fact a fear of stillness. Distraction lets us fill our minds with other voices so we don’t have to listen to the inner voice that whispers truths we fear to confront.
