We finally got out to see the Red-headed Woodpecker at Washington’s Crossing Historical Park in Bucks County, PA. It was amazing to watch this beautiful woodpecker fly from tree to tree storing various nuts in cracks and covering them with pieces of wood or bark.

Over the past couple of years, Sax-Zim Bog has had a healthy vole population and this has attracted some awesome predators like the Northern Hawk Owl. This little guy found a great spot under a bird feeder along the board walk at Warren Nelson Memorial Bog.

I love our Valley Forge Park resident 93/BC. She is a big badass Peregrine originally from Queens. Look at those talons! We had a wonderful time in the Sax-Zim Bog, but it’s nice to be back enjoying our old haunts.

This is it…this is why birders from all over come to the Sax-Zim Bog; the Great Gray Owl. This enormous owl of the boreal forest is the largest in North America. It will sit for long periods of time, cocking its head to listen for tunneling rodents deep beneath the snow.

Black-backed Woodpeckers are very important for the ecosystem because they excavate a cavity once for every nesting attempt. This leaves the cavity available for other cavity nesters like chickadees, nuthatches, bluebirds and owls that cannot excavate their own.

This year at the Sax-Zim Bog, there has been an otter family seen along Stone Lake Rd, and an Ermine seen at the visitor center. Unfortunately, I did not get a photo of either of these during our stay, but I did capture an image of another member of the weasel family, this Mink!

Snowshoe hares are primarily a northern species from the boreal forest. They are experts at escaping predators with their especially large, furry feet that helps them navigate atop the snow and a winter-white coat that acts as great camouflage.

The Northern Hawk Owl is nomadic and will sometimes winter in southern Canada and northern U.S. Over the past couple of years the Sax-Zim Bog in Minnesota has had a healthy vole population and this has attracted these awesome predators.

  9. Today I thought to go check a local spot where I know Great Horned Owls have been. The sun was low and I didn't have a lot of light, but there were at least three GHOs calling and flying around from tree to tree. This great experience will do wonders for my soul.

  10. Peregrine Falcon at Valley Forge National Park, PA. One of my favorites. They are powerful, fast, badass birds of prey.

  11. Canada Jay...formerly known as the Grey Jay. A band of these birds came looking for handouts as soon as we hit the trail in Olympic National Park last year. We didn't have anything to give them and probably wouldn't if we did, but it was fun to get close to them.

  12. A few requirements for taking great waterfowl photos are; good lighting, calm glass-like water and a super low perspective. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any of those but I think I was still able to pull off a shot that I like.

  13. The Common Eider spends most of its life bobbing up and down in turbulent and frigid oceans of the far north. In fact, they are the largest sea duck in the northern hemisphere. It helps to be big if you’re a diving duck. Eiders can dive up to 65 feet to catch their food.

  14. Pelicans will steal fish as they follow fishing boats and hang out around piers looking for handouts. This Brown Pelican was following a fishing boat at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in New Jersey today.

  15. The Winter Wren is a very small stocky bird with a signature short tail that is usually cocked upward, and in my opinion, it is the cutest of all wrens. It is actually one of North America’s smallest birds.

  16. American Mink look super cute, but they are fierce predators. They eat crayfish, frogs, small mammals, fish, ducks, and other waterfowl…in fact, they are capable of killing prey four to five times their size.

  17. I first noticed a group of young deer and does walking across a field so I started taking photos. A few seconds later, this big stag came out of the high grass from behind them and I snapped this shot as he gave a grunt towards the herd.

  18. American Avocets are a neat looking shorebird and their most distinctive feature is their very long, thin, upwardly curved bill that they will sweep from side to side with the tip barely submerged in water to forage for insects and small crustaceans.

  19. It’s always an awesome experience to see a Bald Eagle! In 1980, there were only three known nesting pairs in PA, today there are well over 300! Pay attention to any large birds you see in the sky over Pennsylvania…you might just see one of these iconic raptors.

  20. I’ve photographed a lot of black-crowned night herons in the past, but this July was the first time I got to see the Yellow-crowned Night Heron. We made a stop at the heronry behind the Ocean City visitor center in NJ and it didn’t disappoint.
