Horrified to hear Bunny Guinness of promoting use of peat on Radio4 this morning. Ripping a huge carbon store from the ground, destroying rare habitat, all to grow some ornamental flowers - madness. BBC, can't you find competent gardening 'experts'?

A better call would be to double woodland CREATION. (or x 3, 4, 10 or 100) Natural regeneration is a. often much quicker b. much cheaper c. creates better structure and complexity d. introduces fewer tree diseases e. involves less plastic than planting.

We are using remote cameras to monitor frequency of visits by hares and deer to some of our rare montane willow populations. This information will help to inform our future management of these sites.

Speaking to local tree officer & he's just told me that due to the high demand for for UK nurseries are importing tree stock & they're finding diseases in these trees. This is madness. Why are we not promoting local stock &/or Natural Regeneration!?

" Fully restoring the UK’s lost peatlands could cost between £8bn and £22bn over the next 100 years. But it predicted savings of £109bn in terms of reduced carbon emissions." No-brainer.

Important points on by at tonight's : 1) cannot be an excuse to continue w/ business-as-usual; 2) other ecosystems are just as important; and 3) tree planting areas need to carefully chosen to avoid harming biodiversity!
