TL;DR: Rey claims they have proved the irrationality of the Euler–Mascheroni constant, γ, by elementary methods. Tim pointed out basic flaws. Rey keeps moving goalposts, changing conditions of claims, adding more claimed theorems. Tim very patiently keeps trying to teach.

It’s clear why one party is still interested. The other is just extremely generous with his valuable time; I have no idea why... https://twitter.com/alexkontorovich/status/1218196545281183744?s=21 …https://twitter.com/AlexKontorovich/status/1218196545281183744 …

The answer is that I'm not extremely generous with my time -- it is so easy to spot the flaws in Rey's arguments (or at least those of them that aren't completely incomprehensible) that it's a matter of a few seconds to fire off a tweet pointing them out.

TL;DR: Gowers has superhuman patience and apparently enjoys endless arguments with cranks.

Maybe he just enjoys (as a sort of challenge) a possible 'teaching moment'... I recall Mark Chu-Carroll used to blow off most cranks, but sometimes engage one for awhile.

"between a Fields medalist and a non-mathematician" When you said 'non-mathematician', I thought it meant someone with hardly a clue about mathematics and was just disputing definitions, postulates/conjectures. It doesn't seem like Rey is clueless about mathematics to me.

They are. It is nonsense all the way down.
