It also seems twice as subversive because it’s umbrellas ... and umbrellas invoke this deep derision and a sense of “wow, you are a pansy” amongst pacific northwesterners who see others using them in a normal day setting.

You may be saying to yourself “wow, I had no idea the simple umbrella had so much baggage.” Reader, you have no idea. Umbrellas are INCREDIBLY controversial and there is a lot of shaming associated with their use.
