#SummitForDemocracy Intersession Remark: We must leverage all we have to ensure that democracy’s revival is our top priority.
Dedicate this speech to all my friends in Hong Kong.
1/Today, the HK legislature passed legal amendments that empowers the executive govt to bar foreign lawyers from handling cases concerning national security in #HK. This is another example of damaging #HK's integrity of the legal system. See my thread:
The first ministerial visit since 2018.
In this period, political rights of Hongkongers were gone, thousands of political prisoners persecuted, and 150k+ HKers left for the UK to seek a safe place.
Things are getting worse, your visit endorsed these atrocities.
Such a shame.
Fantastic to meet Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury Christopher Hui again to further discuss our ongoing work to remove market barriers and increase UK-Hong Kong trade
China's skynet now has over 700 million facial recognition surveillance cameras —— half of the world total.
In China, CBDC is linked to your Digital ID/face.
If you drive too fast, skynet (cameras) will automatically fine you and debit your bank account via Digital Wallet.
CHINA - Welcome to Skynet (they really called it that). It's an interlinked system of facial recognition surveillance cameras to crack down anyone considered an enemy of the State.
Now China has 600,000,000 surveillance cameras, half of the world total. twitter.com/songpinganq/st…
Just a fact:
The current government refuses to speak up for British citizen Jimmy Lai, who has been unjustly locked in jail for years.
On the contrary, they sent a minister to look for more collaboration with the Hong Kong government.
Unimaginable.
//La détérioration de la liberté. La peur d'être persécuté. Je me sens vraiment très mal de savoir qu’il va venir ici. Très déçu. Il est celui qui apparaissait à la télévision pour menacer, éradiquer les manifestations, persécuter.//
2/ It’s an attack on the Hong Kong community in the UK.
The event is supported by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, the Department for Education, the Department for International Development, the Department for International Trade.
Something needs to be done.
1/ Utterly disgusted by the fact that the Education World Forum invited one of the most notorious enablers of HK govt, Secretary for Education, Choi Yuk-lin, to London.
No HK ministerial officials should be invited to the UK as they’ve inflicted enormous harm to HKers.
The UK govt continues to appease HK & Chinese govt. Hundreds of thousands of HKers in the UK are highly disappointed.
We should focus on the erosion of freedom, and the political prisoners' issues, rather than inviting the corrupted HK officials.
Not invited: Russia, Belarus, Iran, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela.
Invited: China.
All bad actors, but only one is breaking apart a core, legally binding treaty with the UK. Guess which! :)
Today on #WorldPressFreedomDay, we feature the case of imprisoned journalist, media publisher, activist, writer #JimmyLai, who faces life in prison for his work in Hong Kong. Send Lai a solidarity message via
Thank you all for coming to the screening of "Who's Afraid of Nathan Law?" and for your standing ovation! Means a lot to me.
Hope we can spread the word of brave Hongkongers and continue no matter where we are.
Details of the next screening:
Thursday May 4, 1:00 PM
Nope.
He's a staunch supporter of the Chinese Communist Party, which is continuously suppressing the rights of its people.
Making entertaining movies does not make him a good person. People opposing dictatorial rules and fighting for freedom aren't particularly fond of him.
2/ It sounds counterintuitive. I also thought Canada is more welcoming to refugee visitors like me. The truth is not.
There's a bigger problem behind it, where the rights of refugees are continuously undermined.
Anyways, hope friends in Toronto enjoy the film. See you virtually!
1/ Bad news: I cannot attend the world premiere of "WHO'S AFRAID OF NATHAN LAW" due to a prolonged VISA application. I started it as soon as I knew I needed to attend, but a Canadian visitor VISA is the most complicated process I've ever applied for as a UK refugee.
With intimate access to the leaders of Hong Kong’s Umbrella Revolution, WHO'S AFRAID OF NATHAN LAW? (d. @jpiscatella) chronicles @nathanlawkc—one of the world’s most famous dissidents—in his fight for democracy against a superpower.

CBC Arts picks "Who's Afraid of Nathan Law?" as one of the "10 can't-miss documentaries at Hot Docs 2023."
"It's the epitome of a great political documentary: you learn a lot without feeling like you're in a classroom."

In a span of one week, Chinese diplomats threatened 150,000 Filipinos working overseas, got into a spat with South Korea, and openly questioned the statehood of the 14 former Soviet countries. The common thread between these episodes: Taiwan.
refuses to meet the lawyers of Jimmy Lai, a British citizen that CCP is persecuting because he stands for free speech and press freedom.
That's your China policy -- appeasement.

Lithuania never joined the USSR. Moscow illegally occupied our territory, so we resisted until we restored our independence and the Red Army went back home.
We're not post-soviet, we're never-soviet.
