I still think of 1993 as the apex of Oscar's Asian bias. That year, three Asian films were nom'd for Best FL Film: The Wedding Banquet, Farewell My Concubine, and Scent of Green Papaya -- all great films. Spain's mediocre and forgotten Belle Epoque won in a Eurocentric decision.

Belle Epoque is not mediocre nor is it forgotten. Its current RT score is 95% based on 22 reviews, Banquet-96% on 28 reviews, Concubine-86% on 36 reviews, & Papaya-100% on 17 reviews. Hed Wyn not rated. All excellent films, more or less equally well-received, but only 1 can win.pic.twitter.com/ay9upGNgsH

They are really bad with singling out (East) Asian actors.

Horrible. I do remember Ziyi Zhang winning the Spirit Award vividly.

don't get me mad about the Michelle Yeoh situation all over again
-
Now this I agree on. Yeoh easily should have snagged a Best Actress nomination for Crouching Tiger (as Zhang Ziyi should have as well), and a Best Supporting Actress nod for Crazy Rich Asians last year. As long as we’re on the subject, Hong Chau should’ve won for Downsizing.
