DCLeaks was paid for with Bitcoin. The 11 Russian intelligence agents indicted today bought Bitcoin -- and mined it themselves -- to pay for the infrastructure they needed to hack into the DNC and release the documents.pic.twitter.com/VyJKx8RvA4

And that is about as relevant as what color shoes they wore whilst executing that nastiness. #bitcoin

That is not what the indictment says. "The use of bitcoin allowed the Conspirators to avoid direct relationships with traditional financial institutions, allowing them to evade greater scrutiny of their identities and sources of funds."

If it was anonymous, then how do they know they used it? Indictment also says they used $USD. I assume you’re equally concerned about that? 🙄

From the indictment: "Although the Conspirators caused transactions to be conducted in a variety of currencies, including U.S. dollars, they principally used bitcoin when purchasing servers, registering domains, and otherwise making payments in furtherance of hacking activity."

So your tweet was incomplete. A more accurate tweet would have been. “DCLeaks was paid for with Bitcoin and USD” - trying to use $BTC to avoid detection is careless since $BTC transactions are traceable. Dollars are still the best way to transact anonymously.

No -- the registration of DCLeaks and the server for DCLeaks was paid for with just Bitcoin, the indictment says. The indictment certainly suggests that Bitcoin is easier to use anonymously online than dollars.

BTC is certainly easier to use online, but it is not more anonymous. The number of transactions that took place in USD are, in fact, unknowable.

It's a factual statement likely to be used as an argument to 'regulate' or 'control' Bitcoin. Example: "... bitcoin allowed the Conspirators ... to evade greater scrutiny of their identities and sources of funds. Therefore, Bitcoin must be regulated and controlled."

Of course to regulate or control Bitcoin is impossible. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Computers made it easier for them to hack into the DNC. As a matter if of fact, computers might be responsible for almost all hacks in history. Regulation coming soon.

Just like cash - the preferred and far-and-away most-used P2P value transfer method. Cars, planes, computers, and cell phones all make (any job including crime) easier too. Point voided.
