On the danger of playing the inside game. A short thread about Eleanor Roosevelt, Walter White, WEB Du Bois, Roy Wilkins, and the NAACP (which almost imploded in the period from 1945-50, in significant part over differences about whether to play an inside game).

Also omfg NYT's obsession with describing jails in the vernacular of real estate/hotels is sick: - "ornamented and terraced" - “airy rooms" - "better-class apartment house" - "New York’s newest and perhaps best hotel" - “a fine summer resort,” - “cooler than [a] regular hotel”

The city has embarked on missions to build new and humane cages continually for ALMOST TWO CENTURIES. And this piece outlines that history, with specific attention to the consistent, unexamined (at least, un-self-examined) role in facilitating that endless cycle.

No NYC politician has attempted a response to 's, reflected in the screenshot above: people call jail opponents unrealistic, but even a cursory review of the history shows that the unrealistic position it to think that caging people can be a humanitarian enterprise.

This a blistering, v. well-documented account of 's sycophancy to jail-builders by & Jarrod. Since the 1860s, NYT has extolled each new NYC jail—only to later decry it for its barbarism, while extolling its replacement in similar terms.

Cuomo has pardoned more Black immigrants facing deportation in the past week than has in his entire time in office. Meanwhile, sits in a cage.

(also i'm still waiting on someone to do an exposé about how some of Cuomo's pardons for drug convictions STILL LEAVE THE PERSON DEPORTABLE (see INA 237(a)(2)(B) and INA 237(a)(2)(A)(vi)). some of those folks might win cancellation; some might not. he needs to broaden the scope.)

Sophia & team are out here moving mountains to wring a pardon out of the hands of one of the most unrelentingly heartless governors ever w/r/t clemency power. This is a huge organizing win AND pushes the dial past his singular focus on low-level weed charges for immigrant pardons

A 9th Circuit judge has reversed the convictions for 4 volunteers who left water in the desert, finding that humanitarian aid was part of their sincere religious beliefs under RFRA. /1

With right-wingers rallying around the idea that Sanders is a ~~communist~~, it’s easy to see this turning into another front in the right’s voting suppression campaign.

The bottom line here is terrifying. If, w/in 5 yrs of becoming a citizen, you join a group that the govt views as inconsistent w/ fundamental US political values (an "affiliation [that] would have precluded such person from naturalization" if known at the time), it can--> denatz.

In the new era of denaturalization, worth knowing this history— -1930s/40s—US was trying to denatz communists etc. -1943—SCOTUS said no. -1952—Congress revived political denatz as an evidentiary presumption: do commie shit w/in 5 yrs of natz, & we presume you were commie then.

ICE and CBP stay lying every time they open their mouths. As Rep. Jayapal notes, we wouldn’t have gotten confirmation that CBP implemented discriminatory national origins targeting without a leaked memo.

Seriously, this sick comment should underscore the sickness of a system that places people in a position where their caprice can deprive another person of freedom.

There's this notion that police are killing people because "they dont know the community." When has knowledge, familiarity, or relationships ever stop institutions from being violent? The church? Slavery? Prisons? School cops?

You may or may not think the UN has moral authority or legitimacy to weigh in on this. Either way, these statements are used by organizers (predominantly outside the US) and lawyers (in and outside the US) to critique government abuses.

For human rights-minded abolitionists: UN Human Rights Committee is about to release guidance on the human right to protest. It's accepting COMMENTS. Right now, they say some bad things, like that "kettling" is not a human rights violation. Summary here:
