After photos of packed California beaches led to an outcry that social distancing guidelines were being flagrantly flouted, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered beaches in Orange County, south of LA, closed https://nyti.ms/2SmYv0S pic.twitter.com/xxm5Dw1nEW

Hey @nytimes, for the sake of objectivity, can you please avoid using a telephoto lens when covering stories about crowding? It's visual editorializing. What would this same scene look like from an aerial point of view?

By contrast, see the lead photo used by the @latimes for this story. In both photos, there are a lot of people on the beach, but the telephoto lens makes it seem like they are on top of each other when they are not.https://www.latimes.com/california/gallery/open-california-beaches-draw-rebuke-from-newsom …

I'm a subscriber and regular reader of the New York Times, and much of their coverage has been great. I know they strive for accuracy in their reporting, but sometimes bias or mistakes slip by. Reporters are human after all.

There may certainly be other risk factors, like choke points where many people pass through a small entrance or unsafe socializing between strangers, but let's see those scenes, if that's the issue.

The LA times photo was from a weekday (Tuesday) and a much cooler day then the NY Times picture that was on the hottest day and weekend on Saturday. So just know they aren’t apples to apples

Absolutely, the LA Times photo clearly has its own bias then. (Didn’t mean to get in the middle of the culture war with this comment.)
