Or four parties, as James McGregor Burns described it in Deadlock of Democracy, 1963. But divide among Dems --old Dixiecrats like Eastland vs liberals like Ted Kennedy was wider than among Rs, between West/Midwest conservatives and Javits, Weicker, etc
