Up through the early 1970s, Northern and Southern Democrats were so divided that one could argue we had a de facto 3-party system.

Hey, the South, or people who wouldn’t vote for Bernie in a million years, don’t exist for Bernie bros. Say, “neoliberal” and look pure.

This Matt Stoller article is really well written, thought provoking, provides a compelling thesis to be examined. But the amount of friends on the left that hold it as the new definitive piece of political scholarship is odd. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/10/how-democrats-killed-their-populist-soul/504710/ …

Populists by definition are racists. I am glad they killed it.

In the 1948 Presidential election, the Democratic party split into 3 factions, and one of those factions won anyway.

Or four parties, as James McGregor Burns described it in Deadlock of Democracy, 1963. But divide among Dems --old Dixiecrats like Eastland vs liberals like Ted Kennedy was wider than among Rs, between West/Midwest conservatives and Javits, Weicker, etc

The deep divides in American politics have always been about race. As they are now. Same as it ever was.
